The news that TOC is discontinued - WOW, that was a genuine surprise. My hat is off to them for creating a market before it existed and exiting while they were still relevant. The fact is there are too many digital conferences and it is a huge challenge stand out and deliver value for the sponsors and participants. Digital is now part of the DNA in publishing, just as is Sales & Marketing, PR, or rights - there is always more to be learned, there is new technology to leverage and understand along with new opportunities to exploit in any industry but as a stand alone event, they decided that was no longer where they wanted place their bets. I have a great deal of respect for Kat Meyer and Joe Wickert who set the bar very high for the rest of us in the events and conference world. They led with their programs and how they executed them at TOC.
I confirmed what I already knew - I really don't enjoy bourbon. I went to a bourbon tasting class last night that offered the opportunity to sample Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 23-Year-Old, which retails for $300.00 if you can find it, there is up to a 5 year wait to get a bottle retail while it sells for $600-700.00 on eBay. There were some hard core bourbon aficionados in this class marveling at the complexity of the various bourbons, noting the hints of spice, honey or clove - commenting on how much the bourbon opens with a few drops of water while I slogged through 8 different varieties to get the ever so precious Pappy Van Winkle. I could only think I was sipping 8 different types of gasoline.
Steve Earle's new album Steve Earle & The Dukes (& Duchesses) 'The Low Highway' is absolutely incredible - he is indeed one of the great American singer/songwriters and remains as good and as relevant as ever.
BEA's activity is at a fever pitch right now getting everything lined up to start on May 29th - the next thing to note is our mobile app should be live in the next week, available on iOS, Android and Blackberry.
